Lithium Battery Transportation Requirements for Dangerous Goods

• Lithium Battery - UN38.3 Testing
• Dangerous Goods - Dangerous Goods Packaging Certificate
• Non-restricted Goods - Delivery for Transportation

All batteries must undergo UN38.3 testing. Common types of dangerous lithium-ion batteries are as follows:

• UN3480 Lithium-ion battery packs
• UN3481 Lithium-ion battery packs contained in equipment or packed with equipment
• UN3090 Lithium metal battery packs
• UN3091 Lithium metal battery packs contained in equipment or packed with equipment
• UN3171 Electrically powered vehicles or battery-powered equipment

Packaging Requirements for Lithium Batteries

• When loading, ensure that battery or battery pack packaging is intact and provides a certain degree of protection.
• When loading, try to determine if stacking is self-supporting or if the battery packs can be placed on top of the container based on the dimensions of the outer packaging.
• Batteries can be stored together with the majority of goods during loading; there is no need for special segregation.
• Battery packs must be labeled with the Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods label.
• For air transport of non-restricted battery goods, refer to the requirements for air transport of non-restricted goods.
• For batteries requiring refrigerated transport, follow the relevant conditions for transport in refrigerated containers.
